Black Widow

The black widow spider (Latrodectus mactans) is a highly venomous spider found throughout Texas, particularly in dark, undisturbed areas such as basements, sheds, garages, and wood piles. This spider is easily identifiable by its shiny black body and the distinctive red hourglass shape on its abdomen. While their venom is potent and can cause serious health issues, black widow bites are rarely fatal. Most bites occur when the spider is accidentally disturbed, and symptoms may include intense pain, muscle cramps, nausea, and sweating. In some cases, particularly in young children or the elderly, the bite can be more severe and require medical attention.

Black widows are typically shy and prefer to avoid human contact. They do not actively hunt people but will bite in self-defense if threatened. Preventing encounters involves keeping outdoor areas clean and free of clutter, sealing cracks in walls and windows, and being cautious when handling objects that may have been stored for a long time. If bitten, it's important to seek immediate medical care, as antivenom and supportive treatment can help alleviate symptoms.
